Please could someone explain how do you know if an image is virtual or real, diminished or magnified, upright or upside down.

sorry - please only reply for converging lenses

Converging lenses produce a real upside down image but in a refracting telescope for example; the eye piece lens (The one you look through) produces a magnified virtual image.

This is because the magnified image appears to be coming from a different "source" as the rays of light are diverging from the middle of the telescope.

Simply: real images can be projected onto a screen and virtual images appear as though they are coming from a different source to the original object such as a mirror because you appear to be behind the mirror despite standing in front of it.

Not sure if I helped at all but that is how I understand it
