Our system might not be perfect but it's looking to reform, with the HoL being replaced by an elected Senate, a move towards PR/AV instead of FPTP etc
You should never have to be "protected" from your own elected government. If this government does anything wildly unpopular (privatise the NHS, kill the Queen and her corgis) then they simply won't get in to parliament again (See the Lib Dems nearly vanishing after the student loans betrayal)
The same can't be said for the EU - if they do something you don't like? Oh well! You don't get to vote for any of the commissioners and half the EU staff are people who usually LOST local elections. If the Commission did something you don't like, you have no power to remove them from office and replace them with a better Commission
