University league tables

How much does it matter what position the university holds in university league tables like those made by "the university complete guide" or " the guardian" ?

It doesn't matter at all in theory - the benefit of league tables is that they display a bunch of data about universities side by side so you can understand the strengths and weaknesses of each university/department, look in more detail to decide if they're true reflections and then decide if those strengths and weaknesses are important to you.

Employers don't use league tables (and if they did they'd be using the league table from your year of graduation not the current tables so without a crystal ball you can't refer to those).

You can see a lot of the data underlying league tables in more detail on https://unistats.direct.gov.uk/ (and a lot of this also pulls through to which? university and bestcourse4me - in both those cases they also purchase extra data).

They're a decent starting place, they might help you longlist universities that accept the sort of grades you expect and offer your subject and they might help you ask the right questions when researching further but they aren't decision making tools on their own.
