Why do email accounts now a days require a phone number?

    Back in my day you could make as many email accounts as you liked without needing to give them your phone number(it was optional back then)

    I think its for account security. I have two-step verification set up with my email which is tied to a lot of services related to my email.

    Its to try and reduce spam accounts.
