How does the UMS work to get an A* in Maths at A level(Edexcel)

I've read somewhere that you need 80% across AS topics, for me that is c1,c2 and s1, and you also need 90% overall for c3 and c4. Is this right? If so, then why does a really high UMS matter for the AS level exams, and since i'm doing m1 in the second year, how does this affect it?

You need 480 ums in total that includes 180 ums from C3+4
You don't need a particularly high score from AS in theory in order to achieve that, but unless it's a high one don't expect a good prediction for your final result.
