My 19 yr old son has just finished the first year of a two year HND. He is due to go back to do the second year, provided it is going ahead,in September. He plans to look for a summer job ASAP. But what if he doesn't find anything? Is he eligible to claim Jobseeker's Allowance? He gets a Student Loan and a Maintenance Grant but surely they are only supposed to last for the duration of each term? If he can't find work what is he supposed to live on for the next 13 weeks? [He lives at home with me all the time as he is studying at a local college, but am I supposed to fund him out of my money?[I'm on Benefits ATM myself so can barely afford to make ends meet as it is.] Thanks

No he is still considered a student and cannot claim JSA. Only when his course officially ends will he be allowed to do so. he might try contacting his college to see whether they have any hardship loans, but he is expected to get a job.

The loan payment in April is intended to cover the whole summer, the loans for an entire calendar year not an academic one, you ll still get council tax reduction over the summer but he's not entitled to any state benefits unless he has a disability.
