Rumour: GAME going under

Might be worth be using up any credit you have with the store if you've got any. Haven't used GAME in years personally.

This has had no material impact on the group’s ability to purchase stock from suppliers on credit terms, though this may change as the group’s peak trading period approaches.”
This news comes as a shock to employees who fear for the future of their jobs. We have been informed by a GAME employee that the future for the company relies on E3. He asks to remain anonymous but said:

“Staff are fearing for their jobs as we don’t know what the future holds. We have been told it all relies on E3 and what the companies announce, along with demand of up and coming games. We have had a poor few years as the transition to next-gen for consumers did not happen as quick as anticipated”

Even with 60 million “next-gen” consoles sold world-wide it has taken a few years and much longer than industry specialists thought it would for people to upgrade.

We need something new to sell” our source said, “However the rumored upgraded Xbox and PlayStation Consoles are not what people want just yet, it’s just too early as people have only recently made the transition. Nintendo are keeping quiet about the NX and it’s still uncertain if they will release before April 2017 (this financial year)”.

At present EA have cut ties with us and we can’t get the stock, that’s going to have a huge impact on us with the AAA games they have coming out towards the end of the year, at present we have only been given enough stock to fulfil Pre-Orders for Mirrors Edge. If this is a poor E3, or things are not coming out till later 2017 we are in serious danger of mass closure!”

This news its a sad affair, if the stores can’t provide stock then it will drive consumers towards online retailers, thus having a knock on effect as GAME looses even more custom. We are keeping a close eye on things at OutofLives as GAME is needed on our High Street and will be another loss to us consumers. I personally will miss the midnight launches and finding those hidden gems in stores. That said I won’t miss the constant “do you want to pre-order anything while your here?” Question anymore. We wish all the best to the staff at GAME and good luck for the future.

I don't really go into Game very often and when I do I'm not very impressed by their choice of games as they don't have a wide range of games also I'm not surprised that it's going under for most people are buying their video games from Amazon. Argos, HMV, Tesco, Asda and anywhere else that video games are sold

I hate Game anyway. Full of cringey staff and cringey customers.

The last time I was in there, there was man in front of me moaning to the nerds on the counter explaining why Xbox and PlayStation are pillocks: 'Oh, the XboxOne and PS4 are released around the same time ain't they? Now i have to fookin buy them both now don't I?'. <The stupidest middle aged bald knob that I've ever seen.

The staff are worse.
Dem: Do you want to buy the new Assassins Creed?
Me: No thanks.
Dem: Are you sure? All your friends will be playing it.
Me: Nah I'm alright thanks.
Dem: How about Forza?
Me: Nah I just want the game I'm buying here mate.
Dem: You're gonna be missing out loads

Every single time I went in there it was the same.

That's true as they are just saying things like that just to get you to buy the game. Why can't a gamer go into a Game Shop and get the game that they like to play instead of trying to be told what game to buy even if it is one that isn't your type of game

I don't shop in Game any more, haven't bought anything there in many years. Games are always too expensive and they don't have a lot of choice compared to CeX which is also a lot cheaper. Considering there's a CeX right across the street from Game on my local high street, choosing where to browse is a no-brainer.
I'm amazed they're still in business tbh. Even when I was a teenager their prices were much higher than online retailers and this was 10 years ago

Physical media is dead. Wouldn't surprise me if the PS5 (or whatever it gets called) doesn't have a disk drive.
What's great about GAME?
Ridiculous prices and awful staff. Only an uninformed person would shop there.
Game's been going down for years.. Only time I ever went in was to trade my DS games for money before I knew the Internet existed
To be honest I'm surprised they've managed to last this long. It's simply impossible for a physical games retailers to compete with online alternatives. Their only chance was to jump on the bandwagon and unfortunately (and unsurprisingly), they failed.

imagine in like 25 years WHSmith, waterstones, all of those physical bookstores will also die out...

i should buy as many books and physical media as I could and then in 100 years my grandkids would sell them on extraBay for £1000 a piece :daydreaming: xD
It's hardly surprising, it's not the first time it's happened and the model hasn't really worked for years in the face of digital downloads and amazon. They've only kept going for the last 5-10 years because there are too many console peasants who can't realistically download so many games, or at least not until very recently.
Haven't GAME beng "going under" for like 10 years now?

I think they're reliant on middle aged mothers that know nothing about how much games should cost

I'm not really shocked about Game going under, their business moves are awful. I do try to support the but their are making it hard. I think it would be better if they just become an online retailer.
They won't stop as a business they will just close their physical locations because they cost a fortune to keep open and move into the online domain much more heavily.
Always enjoyed going in to Game but there's no no denying buying online or from alternative stores like Cex (someone mentioned Argos but their prices are just as high, if not higher), Grainger Games and more is cheaper. I do like popping in for a browse though and the staff in my local outlet in Chester are always well-informed and friendly.

That was me that mentioned Argos
Dunno where you guys shop but I've only ever had positive experiences regarding the staff in my local GAME. More often than not I end up chatting **** to them about the games we're both playing because they're all gamers too.

Gamestation was even better though because as soon as I walked in they knew I wanted to look at the N64 games, so the box was brought out pretty much as soon as they spotted me

What's going to shaft GAME is the prices. £50, if not more, for the latest releases? I know they're bound by maintaining a profit margin by some degree, but it baffles me to see even second-hand games going for that much. People are just buying them, in the case of Xbox users, off of the Dashboard because of the sales and the convenience.

So a bloke said something.

I reckon Apple and Microsoft are going to go down. There you go, now you can post that in an article.

I wandered into a GAME at the weekend, and their pricing is still ridiculous. I don't think they can compete with online prices however, as much as they would want to, as their overheads must be pretty high.
