Because 100 UMS brings all the girls to the yard

ums stands for uniform mark scale
it basically standardises raw marks across different papers and boards
it doesn't necessarily have to be full marks, but near close to

Thanks
Getting high UMS takes a bit of the stress off A2 I think.

like this year, I could get absolutely no marks on my S2 exam (literally 0UMS) and still get an A* in maths A level if I do well enough in C3 and C4.

(plus I get to brag about being the best )

Personally, getting full UMS in my AS resits will help me to get an A this year as I have a higher insurance even if one exam goes badly. So that's why some people may want full UMS in certain exams, not necessarily for pride or to show off.
Because it implies consistency. Anybody can get 80UMS - a few hours of studying and a tinge of dedication is all it takes. Getting 100UMS exhibits your ability to not only understand the material to perfection, but also that you are not susceptible to mistakes - something which is especially important for mathematical subjects.

There's that, and the simple fact that <100 =/= 100.
