# STEP Prep Thread 2016 (Mark. II)

Why bother with a post grad? Are they even worth it? Have your say! 26-10-2016

Me too
Have you done the test?

STEP II 2014, mock:
Spoiler:

Question 1. 37 min.
Question 2. 26 min. I didn't do what they expected in the mark scheme for the counterexamples, I considered f(x) = x. Silly me. But it seemed to have worked nonetheless.
Question 3. 37 min. A little of a **** up. BTW you don't actually have to integrate for the equation of the circle, you can just eliminate y' between two equations, after you have differentiated.
Question 4. 28 min. I let k = a, and integrated by parts. It worked, so what the **** do I care.
Question 5. 19 min. I messed up on the evaluation of the constant of integration right at the end. I also emitted the argument for dy/dx = dY/dX, which was worth two marks. I think the mark scheme has ****ed the final answer over also though.
Question 7. 22 min. Did a whole graphical analysis for the last part which I don't think they expected, but my answer matches.

If someone wants to mark what I've done, I can send them a link.

The markscheme was working out a general counterexample so that the markers could apply it to everybody. Your counterexample works fine and is what was intended, I think. I did the same as you for Q4, lol. And yeah, the markscheme ****ed the last bit of Q5 up.

How do I get better at Chapter 5 M5? The other chapters are piss easy and then you get to rotational dynamics.

I remember I got stuck on rotational dynamics when I was going through M5. Then I left it a week, and tried again, and it all made perfect sense. Probably too close to the exams to try this though

Can you wait until tommorow morning (I'll do it as a mock) so that I send mine to you as well?
I want to see other candidates' mathematical style and I'll try to check them
Yep, that's fine with me.

Are you a Cambridge offer-holder?

ill do it again for the bants aswell.

but like don't you remember everything ?
anyway I want to see your highly sophisticated mathematical style so yes do it for the bants, swag , (insert other cool stuff that will motivate you I guess).
Tomorrow babe .

nope, i remember the integration and a mechanics question so redoing is useful for me. i will prob shcoose around 3-4 new different questions as i did 6 last time iirc.

Would do the pape with you guys but already done it . Got just II/III 2015 left, should be enough practice since I'm happy with my performance/consistency in mocks now.
16. May as well post a rundown of STEP II 2014, seems to be what the cool kids aren't doing.

4: I thought this would be a nice starter, seeing as I could more or less what I ought to do in each bit. While my methods were fine, my execution was a bit dodgy. Messed up my substitution algebraically on the first bit somehow, then again on part iii... weirdly, I started with a/x, realised that the substitution was going hopelessly wrong, then switched to a^2/x for entirely incorrect reasons - I presumed the choice of a/x was subpar when it was really my algebraic ineptitude. Took me slightly over half an hour, wasn't feeling great.

5: This looked suspiciously routine. Indeed it was. I thought I had it fully sorted in about fifteen minutes which put a spring back in my step. I only noticed while I was checking over that I had decided that 4*1 = 1, quite lucky that I caught that really and accordingly adjusted my constant. Otherwise fine.

10: Mechanics o'clock, man can't do pure for too long. This was a remarkably easy question (especially seeing as the formula for Y is relatively standard olympiad fare, hence I knew what I was working towards). Spent a minute misinterpreting the last bit of the question as asking for the maximum range, because I'm an idiot, but still finished the question in a solid fifteen minutes or so.

11: Somewhat less trivial mechanics - the force on the ring took me too long frankly, but I got all the results without much issue otherwise. Comfortably done in twenty minutes.

12: Why didn't I do this earlier? Genuinely quite lovely differential equations question number 2... and not even particularly difficult differential equations. Half the question just seems to be repeating exactly the same process. Not entirely sure what the point of this question was, but I'm not complaining. About twenty five minutes or so.

2: Needed another pure really as neither other applied looked agreeable, so I launched into this one. I'm still a bit confused about the whole either/or logical construction in the first bit but oh well. Algebra wasn't quite as bad as it promised, and I knew I was onto something decent when I got pi < 22/7. Took me a while because of the algebra, but still sorted in about twenty five minutes.

At this point I spent about twenty minutes checking and saved myself about four accuracy marks. Might as well. I just about had enough time for one reserve question if I was quick, so...

3: A bit easier than it looked. Similar triangles bash for the first bit, followed by some other differential equation which at this point I was nearly getting tired of. Bodged them a little bit to make the right signs arise, but not too egregiously. Last part was a pretty curve to round off the paper nicely.

Yeah quite happy with that. Probably do the rest of the questions tomorrow.

Insight physicsmaths Zacken EnglishMuon gasfxekl EricPiphany Duke Glacia Krollo 16Characters....

can't think of others please don't take the 2015 papers alone , we should it all together. I suggest a week or so before the real thing ,is that ok to most of you ? Please confirm.
Ignore this post if you have already set up a date (just let me know).

Sounds fine to me. Probably will do it the weekend before the real thing.
