# Mechanics 1 Problem [Edexcel]

Why bother with a post grad? Are they even worth it? Have your say! 26-10-2016
1. I was doing June 2014 Q7 part (a) (ii), find it here: http://www.examsolutions.net/a-level...June/paper.php

As in the mark scheme, I obtained the two equations for T by resolving each particle's forces:

T= 4mg - 4mg/7

T= 3mg/7 + 3mg

Next, I equated these equations and found that m=1.

I substituted m=1 into one of them and got T=33.6. But the mark scheme just used one equation without finding the value of m and expressed T as T=33.6m.

Would I be penalized for finding m and expressing T more simply?

You can't find the value of m with those equations, m is in every term. You have to leave it as a variable as any value of m would work - you don't have enough information.
