For PPE, you study 2 core modules from each of the 3 disciplines in your first year. Politics and Philosophy are essay based subjects; in the former you have the choice of either pursuing an International Relations or a 'State and Society' orientated field of study over the three years during which you'll be here. If you haven't studied Economics before, then this is usually the more difficult of the three, and it's not at all essay based in your first year. A-Level Maths is a serious advantage for anyone wanting to do any kind of Economics anywhere though, as one whole module is devoted to the application of Maths to Economic concepts.

In terms of competition PPE is highly competitive in the top 20 or so Universities that offer it. This year there were around 60 new PPEists in Durham. The standard offer is AAB.

You have a good selection of A-Levels; as I've said, Maths is highly recommended, and anything that relates to the disciplines helps. History is often seen as an advantage (although I guess this would depend on the topics you cover) because of the political lessons inherent in it.

Hope this helps!
