I'm not asking people to be knowledgeable on the subject, merely knowing that they exists would be enough. But I expect too much, most people don't even know where their food comes from.

How common it is is entirely subjective. For instance, for me seeing guns at university was commonplace, but for others they would probably call the police. There are a lot of bad stereotypes about everyone, it just depends on who you ask.

We are talking about the UK and no you can't, not even in the US can you have a fully functioning tank.

Oooops sorry....

Yeah I had this same argument with an american on a tank forum (sad I know), turns out with the correct federal permits you can do so in many US states. Looking it up further once I was aware of this, it isn't actually that uncommon in the US to have private owners with full functional primary and secondary armament.

Having myself shot "super scary assault rifles!!!" in the ACF without either me murdering other cadets or other cadets murdering me, I'd wager it's not the gun's fault, but rather the person pulling the trigger.

A nice intermediate, I think, would be large state-governed ranges in major towns/cities. Weapons and ammunition stored there under lock and key.

That's actually quite sensible. The US has a lot of problems with provision of mental health treatment.

I was more taking issue with the phrasing to be honest ("maybe if people weren't so mentally ill" seems like a massive dismissal of the issue), it seems clear that the lack of a socialised healthcare system is actually a contributing factor to the US gun problem, but providing this seems to have almost as many congressional barriers as delivering gun control - health insurance companies have a hilarious amount of influence in congress, just like the NRA.

Considering you are quite wealthy and privileged compared to most people in the UK living in towns and cities, yes, your expectation is quite unreasonable. The vast majority of 'plebs' who haven't attended private school and don't live in the countryside won't have even seen a gun in real life (unless they were in the armed forces), let alone handled and shot with one. Check your rich privilege please before commenting on other people's lifestyles and just be grateful at how fortunate you were to have attended private school and to live in a nice place with a (presumably) wealthy family.

Your posts show that you have no idea what the life of an average person is.
I'm not wealthy. My modest £19k salary is well below the national average. So to check my rich privilege would be quite impossible.

I live the life of the average office worker. But it is funny that you think you know anything about.

Attack my points not my character.
Also to seriously use "check your privilege" in a debate... Smh.

You went to private school so your family must have had a fair bit of wealth though
I am not my family. I am an independent adult with my own salary.

The real reason for firearms is to protect ourselves from lefties, an automatic is especially handy if you have to deal with hordes, which lefties typically come in.

Whatever. Everyone knows that how wealthy your family was growing up has a massive impact on how successful you are in adult life (it's also backed by research). You are too privileged to even comprehend how privileged you are. By all means though, continue to think yourself as one of the common people. You are really not
I thought we were talking about firearms.

Not my apparent "rich privilege". It just shows how weak your points are when you completely drop them and try to attack me.

Now simmer down and get back on topic.

Don't tell me what to talk about, you aren't my boss
So are firearms difficult to get hold of and expensive?

yes but now we are on slippery slope of which the bottom is the ban of all guns.
"if the dude had a knife instead of a pistol he would've killed even less people." etc etc etc

Yes, the last thing that we want is a safer population, more protected from the dangers of gun violence.

"I need my guns to protect me from other people with guns"

"How about we get rid of them altogether then?"

"but how will I protect myself from the guns?"

It's that kind of logic that creates stereotypes like Americans being stupid.

If you are poor, yes. Shooting club membership isn't cheap either you know (one of the requirements for getting a license)
Not for a shotgun, you don't actually need "good reason" to own a shotgun.

Shall I rephrase the question?
Is a firearm expensive for an average earner?

Moderately. Easily doable for under a grand, the main expense is the gun ifself but you can pick up a low end used shotgun for about £300 or so.
My entire UK firearms knowledge comes from hot fuzz and if it has taught me anything it is that country folk carry a crapload of guns.

Why are they necessary when a hand gun will do for self-defence?
The "self-defence" claim is a myth.
Studies in the US have shown that people who keep a gun in the home are several times more likely to die from gunshot than those without guns.
