VM391 – Dementia Awareness Motion 2016, TSR Labour Party
This House believes that public awareness of Dementia, a group of brain disorders, should be increased through Government campaigns.

There are currently 850,000 people in the UK living with Dementia and this figure is set to rise to 1 million by 2025 and 2 million by 2051. On average, one person develops Dementia every three minutes. Something needs to be done to reduce these staggering figures.

The main cause of Dementia is from beta amyloid plaque formation but it can also be caused by head trauma and the health of the heart. The main aim of these campaigns would be to show people how to spot the symptoms of Dementia because if it is identified and reported to a doctor early, the effects may be reversed. Also, the campaigns would make people understand that if Dementia runs in their family, they will be at a higher risk of developing the condition themselves. The final part of the campaigns would be to show people how to lower the risk of developing Dementia to start with. For example, keeping active, crosswords, sudoku, music and memory games have all been proven to reduce the risk of acquiring the condition.
