I was thinking about using The Perks of being a wallflower as one of the books for my coursework,anyone have recommendations of books i could compare it to?

I wouldn't. It's not the kind of book with enough literary merit to give you enough to work on. (English teacher with decades of experience of supervising A lit coursework speaking here.)
