It depends on the direction of motion.
I generally use positive 9.8 when an object is moving downwards with gravity as gravity acts towards Earth. I then take -9.8 for objects moving upwards.

Really it shouldn't matter as long as you always take upwards forces/ movement to be positive and downwards forces/ movement to be negative. Or vice versa: the key is to be consistent.

Clear working out with diagrams if possible.
Check as you go through. Hope for the best I guess :redface:
Perhaps look through some papers from other exam boards?

Can someone explain 6b in the jan 2013 paper please , specifically regarding the angle.
Can anyone explain how to do vector triangles, when it's not a right angle triangle because I always fck them up ? :/

Same, I've been looking for one too. I've resorted to scouring the Edexcel Solomon papers and picking out relevant questions.

Ah thanks man but how do you know that angle is a and not the angle on the other corner since a was th angle from a to b and he travelled back the same path?
