I was browsing through the latest Edexcel Unit 4 Economics past papers and found this.

The mark scheme says the index going from 100 to 300 means a 200% increase.
Shouldn't it be 300%? As they said "or a threefold rise".

    300%= 300/100 = 3

It's gone from 100 to 300, which is an increase by 200

200 is the rise, and 200 is 200% of 100. The rise is 200%

It's a three fold increase because it's tripled in value.

You're confused because there's a difference between a three fold increase and a percentage increase.

    So it's 100 +100 * 200% rather than 100 * 300% ?
