How many emails should I send out at once?

I would like to do an independent study research course and must contact professors at my school to ask them if I can help them with their research or if they can supervise me while I work on my own project. I really need to get started on this ASAP... I choose courses in 3.5 weeks so I need to atleast hear a response back before then. So this weekend I plan to look up professors and email them. But I'm wondering... should I email a bunch at the same time (incase I do't hear back from one / they say no?) or should I just stick to emailing one and waiting to hear back? It would just get awkward if multiple proffs say "yes" at the same time....
