My daughter has accepted a firm offer to study photography at university this September, however, she is now thinking of studying American Studies at a different university. She has contacted one prospective uni who have said they still have places but in order to apply she must not be holding any offers from other universities. If she does decide to go down the American Studies route what should she do? Should she contact UCAS to turn down her existing offers and apply through Extra?
    Any advice gratefully received.

Your daughter needs to phone UCAS, explain the situation and state clearly what she wants to happen, e.g. "I don't want to go to my firm choice, I want to apply for a different course at another university".

If your daughter hasn't used up all five choices, she should then be able to apply for the American Studies degree. If she has used up all her choices then she can go into Extra and apply. American Studies is obviously a very different degree to photography so it would be a good idea to contact the university she wants to apply to and ask if she can submit a different personal statement directly to them.
