On-Board Diagnostics II

On-Board Diagnostics II

OBD-II: On-Board Diagnostics II

OBD-II is a standardized form of self-diagnostics and reporting that can be found in all cars and light trucks that were built during
or after the 1996 model year. The standard was developed prior to that, and so-called OBD 1.5 systems were installed as early as 1994.

The primary function of an OBD-II system is to gather diagnostic information that can be used to monitor and repair vehicles. Most of
this information relates to systems that can affect emissions levels, but OBD-II systems can also interface with body, chassis, and network systems.

OBD-II uses a standardized pin layout, which allows both OEM and aftermarket scan tools and code readers to access these systems.
Bluetooth OBD-II devices are also available.

Alternate Spellings: On Board Diagnostics, Onboard Diagnostics

Common Misspellings: ODB-II

Examples: The technician hooked his code scanner into the OBD-II interface to diagnose the vehicle.
