If the only reason World War 3 wasn't happening was because a foreign power had the right to dictate terms to the UK, then maybe World War 3 was due.

There would have been no World War 2 if everyone just decided to allow a foreign power to dictate to them.

That said, I don't think World War 3 will happen because of this. The EU will fail(If we leave, which isn't certain), but something will spring up from that. Something perhaps better.

NATO is fine if you're fighting Russia. China or another nation that has more important economic ties with the likes of the US, France or Germany, compared to the UK, and that NATO unity looks a little less unified.

And which Commonwealth countries do you think will stand behind the UK in a war?
