    On Elisions, and Ellipses

    Two Mums brandishing pushchairs
    Festoonèd with Mothercare gewgaws
    Have made their way from the new build
    Estate clutching unfeasibly large voting cards;
    They have torn themselves away
    From the insights of Ruth and Eamonn
    And must now pledge their troth
    To rival suitors Nige or Dave ;
    The Mums enjoy holidays in the sun
    Each year and would like their sprogs
    To attend yoony and have a newbuild
    Climbing in value month on month
    Of their own in due course;
    Images of drowned toddlers chime
    With those of murdered Jo
    Nigel guffaws like their naughty uncle
    Who took the green triangles at Christmas
    And liked to tickle them a lot
    Dave is much more serious
    Like a struggling undertaker;
    His wife is so stylish
    And weighs three stone less than the Mums
    But the Mums' partners say they do not mind;
    Perhaps they will join the Hot Yoga class
    Once things have settled down

    Dave, I can hear the trumpet of Messidor,
    The tumbrils toiling up the terrible way;
    Even to-day your royal head may fall,
    I think I will not hang myself to-day
