There is a triad of three factors being balanced when we decide policy on the cost of further education:

Quality - British and American universities are the best in the world, completely spitting all over any Finnish institution.

Opportunity - German education at its best, is very good, but students are streamlined in quite a ruthless way akin to the old style of grammar schools, which would certainly not be accepted by many in this country.

Cost - British education is among the best in the two aforementioned categories so for us cost is where we as consumers make the sacrifice.

If the UK abolished university fees, we would either have to drastically reduce the number of students going to university or we would have to compromise on quality and neither of these things feel like acceptable solutions.

Only 4 German uni's make the top 100, might be free but it certainly aint good.

It's free in many other EU countries, too. Duh.
I certainly didn't pay for further education. In fact, I was paid to do it thanks to EMA. Those good old days.
