How to tell if I've got Asperger's Syndrome?

Well?

First of all, do you do engineering?
Go and see a doctor. It might take a little while but you'll get a definitive answer.
When you see a parabola do you think of a smiley face or a quadratic graph?

No, I don't do engineering.

I don't want to go to the doctor and randomly ask about this.

I don't know what a parabola is.
physicsphysics has it, so ask him

What has someone's subject choice got to do with whether or not someone has Aspergers? :holmes: Correlation doesn't mean cause and effect
Hold your hand out in front of you for one and a half hours, if your arm starts to ache and or shake uncontrollably, you have autism and need to get your bi-anual injections.
If you think you fulfill the key diagnostic criteria then you should see a doctor if you think a formal diagnosis would help.

Correlation doesn't mean cause and effect, but it's pretty damn good at giving a diagnosis though!
ask people you know, especially people who knew you when you were young (age 4-5) whether they can objectively see traits of an autistic spectrum disorder in you. if it turns out that they do, i recommend you try and get a referral to a service that can professionally diagnose you (or not, if it turns out that a professional doesnt see it in you).

Do you have trouble interpreting and responding to social situations?
Can you understand body language?
Are you obsessed with one particular topic to the exclusion of most anything else?
Do you find yourself unknowingly offending or upsetting people because you can't grasp the unwritten 'social rules?'

If so you may have aspergers but only a doctor or psychologist/ psychiatrist can really diagnose you.
Yes.
Yes.
Not sure.
No.

Well the problem is that they're the people best placed to advise you and start the diagnosis process. There's absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about, they get stuff like this all the time!

It's not always that obvious at that age. My dad said it wasn't that obvious until just before I was a teenager.

No one from the internet can tell you whether you have it or not. You need to get opinions from people who you regularly interact with, but the best thing to do is just speak to your GP.

Doesn't matter what you study. I know plenty of autistic people who have degrees in arts based subjects.

its actually the time period that is focused on when you get a professional diagnosis of ASD (i have one) because its before you know how you "should be" acting and have your behaviour influenced - ASD is a lifelong disorder so behaviours that are purely down to the individual and not socialisation would have been evident then.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't mental disorders diagnosed by a test, whereby a professional goes through a checklist of things to look for, none of which on its own is enough to say you have the disorder, but many of which together make it likely you have the disorder, since they are all correlated?

If you only ticked one of the boxes though, you wouldn't be said to have 'said disorder' though
