Uh huh:
Notts (UK campus only):
33,435

Manchester:
38,590

You can google for the source

Cool, I can pull up league tables too dude. Anyway, you obviously want to go to Manchester, so go ahead man.

Exactly the whole point, which I outlined in my post - it is a personal decision.

I see, I remember looking at their figures a while ago and remember Notts had over 40k and Manc didn't, turns out I missed the 'worldwide' bit next to it.

Have a look at this, most of these stats you will laugh at but there a a few worth noting.

So am I right in thinking you would choose Notts for industrial econ(not proper econ) over Manchester?

Yeah probably. Considering I know a sample size of ~10-15 people doing Ind Econ who all have internship offers from spring weeks, the campus of the b-school is pretty sick and after visiting my friends doing Econ there it seemed like the student body was a good mix of smart and laid back/party-going.

I'll check out the stats

Also I'd be really grateful if someone could help with this: I don't think I'm going to meet my firm offer (or even get it in clearing tbh) and don't want to go to my insurance. If I deferred my offer now, before results, for next year could I just re-take exams and still have that offer? Or would I have to re-apply which wouldn't be ideal as I risk not getting an offer.

No. If you don't meet your offer and the Uni Rejects you, that's it.
You can hold a confirmed place (UF) over to next year, but not an offer (CF or CI), and certainly not a Rejection..

Your Firm may still take you if you are a 'near miss' so dont give up hope yet. If you are certain you wouldnt want to go to your Insurance under any circumstances then phone UCAS now and tell them (this just saves having to turn it away later).

If you do get Rejected and you still want to go to your Firm choice then you should think about retakes and reapplying for 2017 once UCAS reopens in the autumn.

Nice, so you picked management over econ due to the uni name?

I know that Nottingham has a great campus and all that, I've looked into it already, social life at all unis will be enjoyable no matter where you go, but there can be no disputing that Manchester is a better city than Nottingham, so in that sense it will be more fun.

Last time I checked Manchester was a semi- target also? Therefore they really aren't gona look at a Notts applicant over one from Manchester without readi g what else they have to offer.

Also I thought the industrial econ course wouldn't be perceived by IBs in the same way as the BSc econ course that Nottingham offer?

Besides I don't even know if I want to go into investment banking, the lifestyle really doesn't appeal to me, yes my main goal is to earn as much money as possible, but I don't want to completely sell my soul and have no life outside of work in my 20s.

Yep, Warwick has a solid business school and is considered a solid target. I want to study an easy course, at a good university, you will be living the dream for 3 years and have more time to actually study some useful and tangible skills like programming and financial modelling, rather than all the theoretical bs on an econ degree.

Well, as Prince said, the bottom line is that Notts is perceived better by banks. Imo, the campus is better too. If it was BSc Economics at Manchester I would understand, but its the BA version, which is packed by a few core modules and the rest are pretty much a joke e.g social studies, which I have 0 interest in.

Furthermore, heard the economics course at manchester is a bit soft, and individuals who pursued a masters degree had to do 2 years, instead of 1 year to obtain the masters degree.

Had this dilemma too, between Manc and Notts, insured Notts. For you to judge.

Good luck!

Ahh okay. I know the feeling. Its better you realised now rather than later, plus its easier once you're already there

You couldn't be more accurate with that. When it comes down to it, Econ is useless for real-life application- good choice not picking it.

I'd be surprised if anyone calling Surrey directly about the Tonmeister course was told that there were vacancies.

Dare you!

Ahem:

"Thank you for your email,

Unfortunately, our Tonmeister programme will not be available during Clearing.

Due to the competitive nature of the programme, with only 28 students being accepted each year the programme reaches full capacity before the end of the admissions process."

@University of Surrey - you might want to tell your admissions team that their UCAS Clearing listings are advertising courses with no places

I haven't any clue why people are getting het up about whether their course or university is in the Clearing lists. It can have no bearing whatsoever on them personally. Many of the A levels will not have finished being marked yet, let alone been passed on to the universities, so the presence or not of the course in the list clearly is not based on an individual's personal performance one way or another.

I've asked them why in my email reply too.

Kind of reinforces your point that the universities aren't really checking what they are uploading to UCAS.

Are we supposed to apply for clearing now or wait for results day?

If you're waiting for results then you can't apply yet. You can call up and enquire about the possibility of places and arrange to visit if you're already in Clearing but waiting for results.

If you already have your grades then you can enquire, visit and add your favourite choice to Track.
Probably been answered a million times, but are your universities more lenient in clearing? Say for example I didn't meet the offer for my firm, would I be able to do an alternate course that is listed in clearing at the same university, with the same requirements?

If you are rejected then yes, you can phone and ask about other courses - some Unis will make you an auto-offer for another course rather than just reject you, but even if they dont its worth calling on Results Day.

PS. It is an urban myth that Unis all immediately drop their requirements for Clearing - it might happen at the very bottom of the pile but for the vast majority of Unis they want the grades they advertise, its that simple.
Can I just make a point about Early Clearing?

All Unis can roughly calculate if they will hit their target numbers for each course (based on numerous previous years experience) - if they suspect they wont fill a course, they can advertise to those who arent holding a place anywhere else. Some Unis do Early Clearing, others choose not to.

It doesnt mean 'the course is rubbish' or 'they are obviously desperate and on Results Day I'll get in even if I miss my offer by yards'. It just means the Unis have predicted likely spare places. That is all.

This

Add in that a lot of applicants in early clearing have IB and are not only more likely to be international but have an excellent academic record and there's an opportunity for universities to top up with a handful of excellent students.

In some cases if they have a lot of interest in early clearing it might make a course less likely to accept missed grades because they know they can fill the course with good candidates through clearing.

In other cases a course could be in clearing because applicant numbers have collapsed (modern languages:frown: ), or because the course is small (and small fluctuations in numbers can make a big impact in numbers) or because a course is niche or offered at a small or specialist university. Or a course could be enormous and popular and senior management decide to exploit demand to grow at short notice in order to compensate for poor recruitment elsewhere. Or a university has a budget model that rewards growing courses so all courses are under pressure to grow just to maintain their budgets.

There SO MANY reasons for a course to be listed. None of them offer any forecast or insight into how lenient a university will be in August.
