I've got a Labrador, and both my parents work full time, and all us kids are at school most of the day. It's not so bad, as long as you can give it walks every day, and attention while you're at home! Did you ever consider getting two dogs so it doesn't get lonely?

Take this quiz, and answer honestly

And lots more info about owning a dog:

I have a dog and she's super easy to look after, however some dogs aren't, you need to be ready for dogs who may bark a lot and be difficult to deal with. Dogs also cost a lot especially as a puppy as they need injections and they need to be wormed, may need to have checkups, hair cuts, etc. Also food, treats, toys, lead are needed. Training can be easy but only if you have the time, especially when they are a puppy. Also make sure you don't leave the dog home alone all the time and if they are home alone don't leave them for a long time. Also personally I wouldn't recommend leaving a dog in a cage a lot because its kinda cruel and sad, my dog has never had a cage and she's fully trained.

I've got two black labradors, one is three, one is one. When we got the first one, everyone in my family would be out of the house by 8, and back by around 4. Usually my mum would pop in around lunchtime to let the dog outside to go to the toilet and give her lunch (she works at a school so she was able to do that) So, that would be about 4 hours on her own at a time. As a puppy, it will be especially difficult making sure the dog is toilet trained if it is left on its own all day, you'd have to be prepared for many accidents (when the one year old was a puppy, even though someone was home all day we had a lot of accidents! just depends on the dog I guess.)

My two labs were tough work but they are big dogs! A dachshund might be easier to manage. I would say puppies are extremely difficult to manage for first time dog owner (even very experienced dog owners find it difficult!) Have you considered a rescue? They'll already be toilet trained and won't have that crazy stage all dogs go through (at least labradors anyway)
