BA Japanese- language level at the end of year abroad

Hi there. Thanks for reading.

I'm currently a third year student of French and Japanese at UEA, and have just finished my year abroad in Kyoto Japan.

I was wondering what level of Japanese you should expect to be at the end of the year abroad. I know that at Newcastle they expect you to be at least N3 level. Would it be the same for other Japanese degrees at other universities? I took the N3 exam a few weeks but don't know my results yet. I'm taking some N2 prep classes and am doing fine in those.

What level of Japanese is expected by univerisites after spending a full year in Japan?

Thanks a lot

At Sheffield most students coming back from the year abroad achieve N2, however a significant minority achieve N1.
