Donald Trump: EU was formed 'to beat the US at making money'
Donald Trump has claimed that the European Union was created to “beat the United States when it comes to making money” in an interview with NBC News.
Speaking to Chuck Todd, whom the Republican nominee has repeatedly berated as “sleepy-eyed”, Trump also said of the EU “the reason that it got together was like a consortium so that it could compete with the United States”.
The European Union was founded as the European Coal and Steel Community in 1952 in an effort to promote strong cross-border ties in Europe and avoid future wars. It has since evolved to a customs union and eventually to the transnational entity devoted to removing internal trade barriers, building a common market and a fiscal union. Its development and growth has been repeatedly supported by the United States under presidents of both parties.

It matters to us. Brexiteers have high hopes of doing a deal with the US. But if Trump gets in, Obama's promise of us joining the back of the queue will look positively generous.
Trump should look to purchase the EU, see what their share price is and do a hostile takeover, if the EU is a cartel imagine how powerful it would be if the US owned it. He could get on to some investment banks to see if they can raise him the finance needed. Then he could restructure it and sell some of the loss-making parts off.

Many aspects of the European Union are geared heavily to work in certain member states favours. Also there are significant differentials in power and influence amongst the richer and poorer member states in both political and economic matters.
I was more thinking that as the European project developed, those spearheading it's development would see it as a structure that would allow the small/middle powers of Europe to band together and counterbalance the increasing prominence of rising powers. As the world grows multipolar, regionalism is becoming a prominent strategy for increasing relative strength.
