Why bother with a post grad course - waste of time? 17-10-2016

I hope to be studying computer networking at university when I decide to go back. What books can you guys recommend I get in preparation for it.
I'm looking for something to teach me the basics, so I don't attend the class blind lol.
So far, I've found Headfirst: Networking. And it seems to be pretty good.
Are there any other books I should know about?
    Thanks in advance.
