I'm 24, start university in September and have nothing on my credit file so it's neither good or bad. I went to the bank I use most Lloyds (I have an old Halifax account too) in February and asked if they could upgrade my account to a student one. I just have a standard bank account so no overdraft, and had been overdrawn by about 50p for a few days in January so was told to come back in six months without going overdrawn once and then my application should be fine.

Last month I miscalculated my pay day, and so got paid the day after my direct debits came out, but I really don't want to wait another six months if I don't have to.

Is it worth me asking Halifax to upgrade me (I've not used that account in a while but it hasn't been overdrawn)? Or do you think I have a chance with another bank? If so, which one do you recommend?

    Thank you!

    I'd talk to Halifax.

I don't know the ins and outs of this, (having never had this issue) but I have read that if you keep trying for accounts and get rejected, it does show up on your credit report.
