Wanting to study anthropology, but need academic experience for personal statement

Hi,
I'm hoping to start a course in anthropology with St Andrews for the academic year following the next, but I need some academic experience for my personal statement and a suitable reference. I've checked the OU for a modular course, but could find nothing strictly related to anthropology itself. Second place would go to areas of social science and international development. Any thoughts would be appreciated on the matter and a recommendation would be of a star.

You don't need university level anthropology experience to study anthropology at university. It is designed for those who haven't studied it formally before. What would help your application and is far more accessible is informal reading e.g. books and magazines. I'm afraid I don't know which publications are considered well regarded but a quick google found these magazines (and quite a few more):
