Charity volunteering?

Im looking for somewhere to do a charity placement, probably for 4 months or thereabouts. However, I dont want to pay thousands of pounds for the company to get a load of commission. I know there are smaller charities around who dont take commission but these dont tend to be the ones with the flashy websites and are heard about much more through word of mouth. So just wondering is anyone could shove me in the right direction of somewhere?
I really have a wide range of interests be it conservation, teaching or community work Im pretty much up for anything, anywhere (though Africa would be top of the list)
Any ideas folks? xx

not quite sure if this is what you meant but this website is considerably cheaper than many of the bigger companies that offer volunteering.

This organisation is a non-profit making, UN-connected charity.
I've just finished a 2-week project in Wales, and am off to Mexico on 31th July for a month for another one.

http://www.wwv.org.uk/Volunteer.asp - has a really useful database of organisations to search through.
http://www.ecoteer.com/index.php - free/very cheap volunteering.

I was going to ask the same question, so this is really useful for me.

I'm going to take a career break for a few months next year and want to do some volunteer work overseas in that time - ideally doing conservation work (marine life, doing diving etc possibly - I'm a diver and work for the RSPCA), or marketing (as I work in marketing). But so far all I have found is companies who seem to offer "pay 2 grand, we'll put you on a placement conveyor belt for 2 weeks, and then ship you out" type-placements.

Perhaps this is just me being naive - I know I won't make a big difference with what I do, and I know that these companies do need to make a profit, but it seems to me that rather than volunteering, you are paying for the experience of volunteering, and the company is the one who benefits.
