Hello, I'm starting at Cambridge next week, reading Medicine and I'm just looking at the societies i want to join. Would I have time to join two sports teams (or even 3!), or is it just not possible to fit everything in?

It'd depend on what sports and whcih club. Some sports clubs requie the member to commit to more 3-5 training a week while other only meet once a week for practice/training. Also it'd depend on which day/s or week each club obviously.

There's no rule to stop you from joining two or more clubs/societies,, but because medicine being one of the most demanding course, I'd recommend not to overburden yourself with too many commitments, whether it's a sport or non-sport activity, especially in the first year.

I'm starting next week too ^.^
I guess you can just join as many as possible and then stop going to any that you feel are taking time you can't give.

Just to give you some idea.....

Some do play two sports, but not many. And most who do two are usually on a less demanding course than medicine.
People who do two activities typically do one sports and one non-sports or two non-sports societies/clubs.
Amount and quality of work they expect you to do is not quite like what you've experienced at school, so don't use it as your benchmark in your decision. .

Don't forget you can join most clubs/societies anytime you want.
Please don't overload too much.

Man up! I used to cycle from Girton to Homerton to play in a string quartet and then cycle back again afterwards.

Yeah this. It takes less than 10 minutes to go from Homerton to town on a bike. My personal record for Homerton to the chem dept. is 4 minutes.

Cambridge is really not very big.

Are there many political views that are socially unacceptable at Cambridge, which would not be socially unacceptable in general society?

Depends who you socialise with.

The only thing that's politically very wrong and utterly socially unacceptable at Cambridge is The Other Place.

Not sure if your definition of progressive liberals is same as my idea on what progressive liberal is.
Don't want to turn this thread into a political debate battlefield, so I'm going to bed.

In all likelihood, probably. With as many students as Cambridge has there will undoubtedly be some bad eggs.

I've never seen any outward racism in Cambridge however.

Is there any society where there's no racist?

And what happened to your fridge and room? That's need more urgent attention.

I was about to ask the same...

Apparently, two people once voted for BNP, in 2010.

But I'd imagine they just did it for a laugh.

Have you heard of him?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Griffin

Why do you think they did it for fun?
There're thousands of students, it's no surprise a few of them are racists.
Cambridge or any university towns are usually more racially diverse and internationalist community but they're not immune to racism, you know?
Original post by Mathemagicien
Honestly, it had never occurred to me that he might have gone to Cambridge.

Even if they were BNP supporters, doesn't it make more sense for them to vote UKIP than BNP for their protest vote during general elections, when we have the first past the post system?

The only way voting for any other than the top two/three parties influences things is by persuading those two/three parties to try gather the votes of the smaller parties - so BNP supporters should try to vote UKIP in order to persuade the Conservatives to move further right, because the Conservatives are not going to go after BNP votes.

As I said, there're thousands of students. So there're bound to be various views on various things .

Not all the people think like the way you think.
Perhaps they were not trying to influence things.
