Is it frowned upon to take a year off and retake?

So I am currently in the situation sitting with BBC (Econ, Maths, F.maths) and B in EPQ and rejected from UCL, grades needed: AAA.

As soon as I got the grades I decided I was going to take a year off and retake, but I took some advice and looked in some clearing options.
At the current grades I have gotten offers from SOAS to study Economics and Queens mary to study Maths with stats. And also I will be considered to study Economics at queens mary if I can get my B in econ remarked to an A (4ums off).

I called up UCL, they said they do consider people to retake but are less competitive then new candidates.

Any advice?
