HL English literature as a self-taught/private candidate?

So I'm a 21-year-old student from the EU. I've always wanted to study English at a top university in England (Oxford/Cambridge, Durham, UCL).

Long story short, I already have a level 3 qualification from my former school, but I couldn't take English literature because this subject doesn't exist in the Hungarian system (except at one particular school, and as I didn't go there, they wouldn't let me take their exam)
I have tried applying to a UK college to do A-levels, applying for an IB scholarship at our British international school as well as taking the CIE A-level in English, but all my plans failed for various reasons. There is another IB school here in Budapest where I *could* take an IB exam, but they don't offer English A: literature. Would I still be able to take the exam at that scool? More importantlyy, is it possible to take only one IB subject? Considering I never went to an IB school, am I allowed to take an IB exam at all?

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be "teaching myself" literally - I do have a tutor who would be willing to help me prepare. I couldn't possibly attend the IB course itself (it's a long, complicated story which I'd rather not share here)
