Imperial Maths MSc (pure)

Just wondering if there is anyone on this forum that can tell me a bit about doing maths at imperial (undergrad or grad level). What is the general standard of people there (ie. are there people that get 100% on modules)? How many people are on the course? What are the lectures like? Do they have many bursaries available? etc.

I've just finished my BA in maths (cam), and am seriously considering going to imperial for a masters (or another london uni, if I don't get in there).
You might want to post this in the Imperial sub-forum.
Standard's pretty shoddy, generally people are a little bit thick but other than that I've heard good things :yy:

I know but from the open day you could tell the quality of students was a little below your average comprehensive. Bunch of chavs really.

Depends what you want to study. Imperial has is quite good at Pure Mathematics. Especially in Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory. Not so much in analysis and discrete.

So if you want to specialise in analysis or discrete, then its best to stay at cam. Actually it is best that if you stay at Cambridge anyway unless you are really scared of Part III?

They have an intake of just under 250 students and I think that there are more than 70 remain to do the 4th year (I am not so sure on this because my information is quite outdated on this)

As long as you have a 2.1 from cam you should easily walk into imperial and out so I wouldn’t worry. They study some of the material that you covered in your 1st and second year in their 3rd and 4th year! For example I believe that you can take Metric and Topological Spaces in your first or second year at Cambridge. At imperial the same course is taught in the 3rd year and you can even take it, with a little bit of additional material, in the 4th year. This reflects the difference in the quality of the students studying at the two different universities.

Why dont you want to stay there for Part III?
