Does your employer invest in its staff?

A massive gripe I have with my employer is there is zero investment in staff, no training no nothing. I expected when I landed in the corporate environment to be continually developed but this has not been the case. My boss litterally said "develop yourself". Am I being unreasonable here? Am I asking too much? I just requested there should be some training and development which makes more efficient staff, to me its basic business and I find it unreasobable I should take it upon myseld to fund training.
