how easy is it to get released from a uni on results day to be able to enter clearing
By all accounts, not very. Uni admissions departments have got other priorities, so PQ's advice was always to get yourself released before results day as long as you were sure you did not want to go to your firm and/or insurance. If what you are thinking about is whether to go in to Clearing with better grades than you were expecting, that's trickier. What course/which uni/what grades are we talking about?
Its worth avoiding doing it on results day if possible as the uni will be very busy and will have other priorites. In which case releasing you may be put at the bottom of a very long list of things to do and you could be waiting for days before you are officially released. By that time some of the best places in clearing are likely to have gone and you still may not be able to get onto the course you want to.

If you are certain you do not want to go to your firm or your insurance choice contact them NOW asking to be released.
I asked to be released from Kent and due to complications it took well over a month to be sorted. That was back in february so thankfully its all sorted now.
The uni probably will release you because they don't want a student who doesn't want to be there and will probably drop out when they could give the place to someone who does want it instead, but it will be by no means their priority and they'll be very busy with people who've missed their offers and Clearing, so they could drag their feet about it. This could mean you miss out on the Clearing place you want because the good ones tend to get snapped up quickly. I'd definitely recommend phoning the uni and asking them to release you now if you're sure that's what you want because it will be much less hassle.
