Help Calculating equilibrium quantities?

Hi,
I'm starting Y13 next week & trying to revise old stuff & read ahead a little before then in Chemistry. I'm fine with most of it but this one thing confuses me.
When calculating Kc from equilibrium amounts my textbook says 'using the balancing numbers in the equation, the changes in the amounts of other species can be calculated.' How do you use the balancing numbers to find the changes in moles?
It's probably staring me in the face but I can't see it
