I am applying this year for History at Oxford, however I'm experiencing an issue regarding what subjects I should choose to carry on with next year. I am definitely taking History and Geography next year and should achieve strong grades in both, however I'm not sure whether to continue with German or Film Studies.

For German AS I got a high C grade, and for Film Studies I got a high B grade (both very close to the next grade up). I either have the option of continuing with Film on a stronger AS grade with a greater likelihood of getting an A grade as would be needed for the AAA entry requirement, or continuing with German and retaking the German AS exam I underperformed in to aim to get an A in that.

I feel I would achieve a better grade more easily in Film Studies, whereas with German I think I'm possibly at a disadvantage if I go forward with AAC with the intention of retaking an exam to bring the grade up to an A in my application(??). I have queried admissions tutors from Oxford and King's College London, both of which state that all A Levels (except Critical Thinking and General Studies) are considered equally in applications. However, I'm not sure if this is actually true and I'm wondering if my Oxford application in particular will be setback by having Film Studies which is (though not stated so by Oxford) considered a 'soft subject' generally.

So my problem is whether I should continue with Film Studies and be probably more likely in meeting the grade requirements of AAA, or continue with German (retaking the AS exam I did not do so well in) with the aim of getting an A in that, albeit with considerably more difficulty?

Apologies for the length of the post. Thank you very much for any responses, I really appreciate it as this is something I'm finding really hard to be decisive on.

It's not in the University's interest to mislead candidates. If you've been told that Film Studies is fine as a third A level, and you're likely to do better in it than you would in German, it seems like Film Studies is the subject to take.
