I am interested in possibly becoming a psychiatrist for a career, but is there a way to get into psychiatry without going through medical school first? :smile:

I want to be a psychiatrist also, the way Im going about it is by doing a degree of psychology, then doing a Phd at postgraduate.

That would only make you a highly qualified psychologist, not a psychiatrist.

sorry Its a psychologist I want to be, to become a psychiatrist you need to specialise in that certain field. I once wanted to be a clinical psychiatrist, and to do that after the degree, you do a Msc of clinical psychology.

Yep, i can clarify that. Only if u do medicine, can u be a psychiatrist.(Cos u have to administer drugs and things, i think) I know this cos one of my friends is going down that route. I was gonna do psychology, u see but anyway, u cant be a psychiatrist by doing psych, im afraid. Sorry! We've had it drummed into us the difference between a psycholgist and a psychiatrist well before we even started our psych ALevel course! lol
