Would living in private halls put me at a disadvantage in terms of making friends and what not? I could live in halls but I'd have to share a bathroom which I cannot convince myself to do.

Is there anything you want to know about sharing a bathroom?

Also, if you have to live somewhere far from campus when you have the chance to live on campus... (if the uni accommodation is on-campus) then ... I wouldn't pass it up.

TBF many private halls are very well located these days and some of them will be in superior locations than some uni halls.
Not being able to share a bathroom is a bit precious, but if you have the money then go for it. You are more likely to fond like minded people who wnat their own bathroom ofc, but there will be more a mix of all three years rather than a heavy bias towards freshers in uni halls. Should be enough for you to get to know, bit pot luck I think. Check with people who know the hall you intend to go to.

You cna make friends on your course and joining societies. Halls that were catered also had the opportunity of socialising during dinner and breakfast times as it was more communal. You cna be fine either way.

You will definitely make friends, the only difference is that these friends may not study at the same university as you.
