Materials Science and Engineering thesis topic

I was wondering about any advice any of you guys could offer me with regards to my thesis. How do you know how far wide to cast the net as in scope once you've identified a topic? My topic (won't be too specific here mainly because I don't exactly know what to specify. Only basing this on what my supervisor gave me for research in terms of reading a paper) is to do with solar cells and solar materials. Its a third year research project.
