yes mate i received 4 offers this week from Southampton, Leeds, Durham and Bristol. How is your application going?

Wow congrats! I got an offer from Leicester but I'm still to hear from Durham, Leeds, St Andrews and Edinburgh urgh
[QUOTE=f.bloom;68250994]Correct, a typical offer is AAB but with 3 hard science subjects it is ABB. Okay I'll take that into consideration. What uni are you studying at and do you know anything about earth sciences at Durham?
I didn't apply to Durham as I wasn't sure about some of the module choices, but that was just what I thought I would be interested in doing and I also wasn't too keen on having to pick options for the first year. That was partly because I wanted to do more options than you seemed to be able to choose in the first year. I applied to Imperial, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool and Oxford for a mixture of geology and geophysics courses. I'm reading Earth Sciences at Oxford ( Worcester College).

Cheeeers, ah nice good choices! Just keep checking your emails everyday, my 4 offers all came in, in the space of around 24hours haha. I was tempted to go for st andrews and either edinburgh or glasgow although the extra year in the degrees and the distance put me off :frown:

Oh right, i did look into the courses a bit although not thoroughly. I liked the fact that with durham you can do modules from other departments alongside like a language. Nice, i am kind of regretting not going for imperial now.

Unfortunately, you won't be hearing from St Andrews or Edinburgh for a while. They usually don't give out offers until end of Jan/Feb time. Source: Just graduated from St Andrews BSc Geology

Thanks for the advice! But that is so frustrating! Ah well there's nothing i can do to speed it up. Anyway, how was St Andrews??

Np, I think it's the same for most schools at St Andrews. They tend to wait until near the end or just after the UCAS deadline. Geology at St Andrews was amazing. I initially got in to do a BSc in Geography but took Geology modules in first year as I thought it would compliment it well. Within 1 semester I had fully converted to BSc Geology and eventually only ended up doing 1 module in Geography lol.

It's a very tight-knit department with most of the lecturers and professors having an open-doors policy. Coupled with the field-based focus (you'll do lots of fieldtrips - I ended up travelling to 9 different countries as a result of my degree!) you'll get to know not only your classmates but, also your lecturers very well. Which really comes in handy during your review essay and dissertation.

The first 2 years give you plenty of breadth and then in 3rd and 4th year you're given more choices. Some schools are more specialist e.g. Aberdeen = oil, Exeter = mining. St Andrews gives you a taster of everything in classes, let's you apply in in the field, then prepares you to move on to an MSc where you can really specialise in what you're interested in.

IIRC Edinburgh tends to be very similar in this regard. I remember there was a talk last year when we had students from Edinburgh and Glasgow visiting. The Glasgow ones were amazed at how much time we spent in the field compared to them. Dunno much about Leicester but, Durham is really good too for their Geology.

I'm sure they will! Let me know how you get along I live really close to Durham, it's a great student city, and it's so close to loads of amazing places, like the Lakes, the Dales and the coast as well! My two favourites are Imperial and Leeds, Durham was up there but I'm not sure just because it's so close to home...
