I think he has got some past or inner conflict with love troubles and is confused so keeps taking it back. You should let him affirm his feelings once and for all. I wonder why hes infatuted with you. Maybe try dressing not nice and see what he thinks then.

tbh I don't know much about relationships. That's kind of strange, for him to only act like that when other people hit on you. That gives me the impression of a clingy person but, again, what do I know...
