You need to be aware that atoms have protons, neutrons and electrons. You need to know their masses and charge as well, A proton has a charge of 1 and a relative mass of 1. Neutron: Charge is 0 while relative masss is 1 and electron has a charge of minus 1 and a relative mass of 1/2000 or (neglected. Basically the mass of an electron is so small that you don't really consider the mass at all).

You need to know that the protons and neutrons are packed together in the centre of the atom that is called the nucleus which is extremely small compared to the overall atom. Most of the atom is actually empty space. In addition, electrons orbit the nucleus.

Atoms are distinguished by the number of protons they have. So for example, if an atom has 1 proton its a hydrogen atom if has 6 protons it's carbon and if it has 11 protons it's always a sodium atom.

As for the number of electrons atoms usually have the same amount of protons as they do electrons. So a hydrogen atom has 1 electron, carbon 6 and sodium, 12. (This however can change and you'll learn about it but I don't think this stuff comes under atomic structure)
