Just hearing this. She was and is still probably Coronation Street's most famous, most iconic actors. I stopped watching Corrie after her character left. I will never forget when her on screen husband Stan, played by Bernard Youens, died in real life. They had to rearrange the story and put in the story that Stan had died . Hilda after the funeral was fussing over the guests at her house, and smiling and being jolly with everyone. Then they all left. It cut to her sitting at the kitchen table holding a photo of Stan/Bernard. She said "Oh Stan", and sobbed. It was real and raw and me and my mum and millions of other people watching sobbed with her. RIP to a TV icon.
