It's not hard, send a VM to someone you think you may get on with and watch the friendship blossom. I've met some really good people on here who I count as close friends.
I know to make friends in real life but not on TSR. Maybe this links in with how I like talking to people in real life, but not into private messages unless they are special. Group chats I used to be into but now they are just annoying.
Honestly, say hi to someone either in a VM or a PM and if they are interested they will say hi back and ask how you are doing and then you can progress. If you become good friends then it's advised to take it off TSR like getting their number and using WhatsApp or using Kik.

I think it's hit and miss. I know I'm amazing and witty and beautiful and fun and kind and emphatic, perfect in every way but modest to, but no one else seems to agree.
I found that when talking to people on threads, I started a new friendship. Maybe start an AMA or a thread about your hobbies or music taste? That worked for me.

Just be yourself, really And then you'll get along with the people you've got stuff in common with
