Placement year tips, Software Engineering

I have started right now year 2 of Software Engineering it is not top uni in the UK. I have received first during the first year 87% and I would like to know what else can I do to find a placement.

*No A-levels/GCSE
*87% from first year
*Did volunteering programming
*have portfolio with my programming projects

I have been going through gradcracker/ratemyplacement on daily basis and applying to many companies, I do not have A-levels nor have I lived in the UK for more than 5 years which automatically excludes me from a lot of companies especially national ones like National Grid.
I have applied to 14 companies and got rejected from 7 already. I would want to know what could I do to increase my chances and I would also want to know what are my odds of even getting a placement? Can I reapply to companies that have rejected me (based on online tests) would that even make sense?
