Hi guys

As you may have seen in J's update thread, the mods have recently been putting together a list of developments, including some of the the little but annoying issues that we want to get fixed and some new features in order to improve the site. The list we've come up with so far is:

Spoiler:

- Missing plugins to be put back
- 'Warned' sign on alerted posts
- a way to pay for subs in other ways apart from Paypal
- facility for subs to pause and restart their own subscribtions, with sensible restrictions
- censor filter to work on wiki as well as main forums
- Improve post report system
- A way to report PM's for abuse/spam etc
- Auto-merge in D&D
- Facility to ban people from individual threads rather than the whole subforum
- add 'find all threads started by' option to the drop down menu when clicking on a member's username
- ability to turn off post count in a single thread
- threads automatically lock at 10,000 posts.
- ‘new threads’ function (like the new posts function but for threads)
- multi-quote
- special rep gems (see Alan Patridge’s post here but the idea wasn’t very popular)
- A ‘TSR Classic’ skin
- A minimal skin without avatars and sigs etc.
- The buddy list to be made more useful – integrate ‘buddies online’ list into my home?
- bigger posting fields, including for PMs
- able to press Ctrl+B or the 'B' button at the top of a post box without the box scrolling back up to the top
- keyboard shortcuts for "post reply" or "new thread" etc
- 'accepted answer' feature in tech, which highlights the correct answer, and then adds [resolved] to the thread title (not a very popular idea)
- A way to turn off announcements after they have been read, forum descriptions, rep gems and the information to the right of the postbit
- Subscription to forum made more useful (see Generalebriety’s post here
- A livechat with CN and J
- More extensive WYSIWYG in quick reply
- Option for email notification of new threads in subscribed forums
- Extend ‘who quoted me’ to last 50 or so quotes for subs or full history if possible
- Facility where if you edit the post to add a quote in, it shows up in their 'who quoted me' too, and if you edit a post to remove a quote, it disappears
- Non-subs not being able to deny read receipts being sent.
- Organisation of smilies, perhaps the box of smilies to the right of the post field could be customisable. Eg. ‘my smilies’
- ability to form photo albums attached to individual profiles
- Ability to see Signatures in Member's Profile Page.
- One touch buddy/ignore lists (ie. a buddy and ignore icon next to the rep button)
- A menubar icon (on the start bar in Windows, on the menubar in Mac) that pulsates in colour for 2 seconds every time a)a subscribed thread is replied to, or b) That someone quotes you.
- A way to share the results of a site search
- A rosette system
- fix the shoutbox so that when you write a whisper and forget to put the person's name in, it doesn't crash
- virus scan all attachments before they are posted
- fix the search so it doesn’t say ‘posts from last day’
- fix the time delay on the search and links
- alerts for society leaders when a new join request has been submitted
- ability to manipulate the ‘my home’ page
- disabled rep feature for subs only available to subs with positive reputation
- previews of images that are attached to posts see here
- When someone accidentally double-posts in rapid succession and the duplicate post message appears, you are taken back to the last post in the thread, not the first
- "Delete ALL thread subscriptions" button
- option to show the number of wiki edits you have made in your profile/postbit
- a members list in the Socs thread that is automatically updated when a join request is approved
- when a member has disabled rep, for it to say 'x has hidden reputation' rather than 'x has disabled reputation'
- automated way of letting members know when their anon threads have been approved in H&R or if they've been disallowed
- A place to enter an edit reason in the quick edit screen
- Ability to search through societies only, abillity to order societies list by number of members, number of posts / most popular etc...change the default view to "most popular"
- Ability to search through PMs
- On the user post report page it would help if it showed the forum a post was in...that way you could see quickly if/where a reported thread had been moved to (and also if it's been moved to bad threads/recycle bin).
- In usercp where subscribed forums are listed it would be handy to be able to adjust the ordering
- if you post one time anonymously in a H&R thread, that would be the default in that thread.


Awaiting feedback on:

- to have in forums the wiki article you are viewing like you have the thread you are viewing showing up
- remove the 'talk' page link completely.
- to make all the links the same colour - currently some are blue (because the old user page or talk page has been created in the past) and some are red (because the user page or talk page has never been created).
- RSS feed of new posts from your Subscribed Threads and Who Quoted Me
- ‘My contributions’ link to appear in the box with the other wiki tools
- facility to make the images on a wiki page in to a link to somewhere (like another page, a forum, or a website?) http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ImageMap
- when you click on the reply count for a thread and it brings up that window with the postcount for each user, we could click on the postcount and it would do a search for all of the posts by that user in the thread
- when you hover over a smilie, for it to show the code for the smilie rather than the name
- smilies in usertitles for subs

- A "Delete ALL thread subscriptions" button
- when you try to rep someone before the 14 days are up, it alerts you before you write the rep message, rather than after
- one page/part of a page which updates whenever there's a new thread/update to subscribed thread etc
- A vista gadget that implements the RSS feed
- a feature on the personal links editing page to be able to shift the links up and down into an order you want
- reduce the 30 second wait between posts and increase the time between making a post and being able to edit it without the ‘last edited by x at y time’ message appearing on the post
- networks a la facebook
- uni flags in postbit. Able to have a uni flag and a country flag simultaneously
- install TIPA - package that allows you to display phonetic symbols. Would be useful in language forums

Once the new site design is up and running, there is going to be a burst of time dedicated to getting some of the things on the list up and running. Top priority is being given to restoring what little is left of the lost functionality (youtube tags etc.) and then we will be working through the list systematically according to priority. More minor features might take a little while to be implemented.

After the burst of time spent on these developments, there will then be a mixture of Acumen PI driven developments and member developments, with 25% of the ongoing development time being dedicated to member developments, the little things like these that make a big difference to the members.

What we'd really like though, is some ideas from you guys. What kind of things would you like to see to enhance the site and its usability?

We'll be adding sensible and realistic developments to the list so let's hear your ideas!

how we currently have a function to display unanswered threads and new posts. could we have a button thingy to display threads started in the past 24 hours or somthing like the new posts does.

Ok, you know like on the BBC celebdaq thing - once you get a certain amount of money, you get an icon which represents a big amount (like a boat to represent £25million) and then it is reset with just that icon there. Could we have the same for rep, so that, instead of having so many gems, it gets reset at a certain point, and you have a special icon next to it.

I'm sorry, probably not very clear.

You mean like a 'new threads' function that is basically the same as new posts, but threads instead?

I think it looks odd/complicated, much prefer how it is now.


edit: I like what dh suggested (although I'm not sure if it is a problem with the search indexing as posts and not threads? Maybe not, since the 'unanswered threads' works...)

I like the rows of gems. It's gonna be a while before anyone gets to pig's level, and I think it's fine at the moment. It would also cause lots of threads in about asking what each symbol was worth

im not sure i understand it is it like you get to six gems and then get a star. then start from 0 gems and when you get another six you get a different coloured star

kinda, yeh. You see, each gem = an image to load. By cutting down on the amount of rep gems per pageview by 5x, it would be much more efficient. It would also mean that, due to the continued inflation of rep, soon loads of people are going to be getting 4 or 5 golds, and it will be silly.

I'll do a mockup of my idea to make it clearer.

I've asked about this a few times and haven't received a concrete response I personally don't want the appearance of TSR to change at all, so a classic skin would be perfect

So basically, for example, if someone has a gold gem, instead of displaying all 12 green gems and the gold gem, just display the gold gem?
