Veterinary Medicine Work Experience

Are there any current vet students out there who could tell.me what work experience they got before sucessfully applying to university?

I'm not a vet student but I've finished sixth form and have many friends at uni including vets.
The work experience they had ranged massively, literally anything working with animals.
Most of them had at least been into a vet practice, if not regular work experience. Successful applicants also tend to have a longer history of volunteering/paid work in relation to animals in some way- for example, at an animal shelter, an animal charity, a grooming parlour, a zoo, a farm or a wildlife park.
